Excursions
Mount Etna from Taormina
Europe’s highest active volcano dominates the view from Taormina: in a day you can head up towards the craters and taste the wines of its slopes.
Two sides, two experiences
Etna North – Piano Provenzana
The side closest to Taormina, about an hour’s drive via Linguaglossa.
Etna South – Rifugio Sapienza
At about 1,900 m above Nicolosi, an hour and a half’s drive: cable car, 4×4 tours and the Silvestri Craters.
How high can you go
From Rifugio Sapienza the cable car rises to about 2,500 m; from there 4×4 vehicles and guided hikes continue towards 2,800–3,000 m.
The summit craters can only be visited with authorised guides. High-altitude access may change or close depending on volcanic activity.
What to bring
- Closed hiking shoes
- A jacket and a sweater: it’s cold up there even in summer
- Water, sunscreen and sunglasses
